The band blink 182 might be well in their 30’s but are fully aware of the importance of the social web in the 21st century. In a previous post I wrote about how important branding & social media is for any band right now. In this post we’ll see the impressive numbers a famous band can get when it starts to use social media in an effective way.
At the 51st Grammy Awards ceremony on February 8, 2009, all three members of the band appeared on stage for the first time since December 2004 and announced the band’s reformation, stating “Blink-182 is back!” A message appearing on the band’s website the same day confirmed the reformation and added that the band was in the studio writing and recording a new album and preparing for a world tour.
1) The buzz created by the rumors was just insane for music blogs. On absolutepunk.net the numbers went crazy. Ususally, a thread about a regular band gets between 50 and 100 replies from the community. When the rumor of the reunion became concrete, the community lost its mind: The post “David Kennedy Appears to Confirm New Blink-182 Album” got 11′500 replies in 2 days, then the posts about “Blink 182 Return” and the annoucement at “the grammys” had around 6′000 replies each in more than 10 days, added to a couple of minor post this gives us a total of 25′000 replies in 10 days on a single music blog! In terms of engagement, for a blog which has a monthly traffic between 120′000 and 140′000, it’s a pretty huge number.
2) the google search Blink 182 back together returns around 120′000 results! (on this result comes a some post, articles about a possible reunion, so prior to their announcement). On monday May the 18th they played live one song on television at the Jay Leno show, you can already find already dozen of videos on youtube counting around 200′000 views.
3) It is also pretty interesting to notice that while a lot of bands still communicate mostly on their website or myspace, blink 182 has a very basic website with almost nothing on it (still). But they are spreaded all over the net through facebook, youtube, twitter so it’s even easier to follow them and get fresh news from them. For instance Mark Hoppus twitter account started February 27th (20 days after the announcement). In 3 months he can count almost 490′000 followers (more than biz, the co-founder of twitter) and 1′300 tweets, Mark write also on its blog himynameismark. You are also able to follow Tom Delonge almost every day on his modcam on modlife.com, blink 182 has also an youtube channel dedicated to their past work, and blink 182 is asking its community to help them decide their set list on their upcoming tour here on pickrset.com
Blink 182 are using all the relevant channels to stay connected and entertain their fanbase while they are recording and preparing for their summer tour. They have always been an entertaining band on stage and now they are doing that through social media tools. They give and create daily content for their fanbase and let them spread them around the web by their community. This really shows us the power of a committed and loyal community even after a 4 years break.
